Making sure an oilfield runs smoothly and safely means doing regular inspections. Every bit of gear needs a once-over and fixing up if necessary. But sometimes, in a hurry to get things going again, it’s easy to miss small stuff that needs checking. So, how seriously do you take inspection day?

The Importance of BOP Inspection

To streamline your inspection day, try sorting your checklist by category. Go through each category individually, tick it off when done, and move on to the next. This way, you won’t waste time double-checking or missing anything by accident. Need a template? Give this one a shot on your next inspection:

  1. Gauges
  2. Valves
  3. Installation
  4. Hoses & Cables
  5. Safety concerns

1) Gauges

During your inspection of the blowout preventers (BOPs), make sure to examine and test the essential gauges. Taking the time to inspect these gauges can help ensure smooth and safe operation of your equipment. These gauges include:

  • Drill pipe pressure gauge: Assess the pressure indicated to ensure it’s within the acceptable range.
  • Casing side pressure gauge: Verify the pressure readings to ensure the casing side is operating as expected.
  • Drilling standpipe pressure gauge: Check the pressure gauge on the drilling standpipe to ensure it’s functioning correctly.

2) Valves

In the oil and gas sector, valve integrity is critical to prevent leaks and potential blowouts. Ensure thorough checks on all valves across your equipment, including:

  • HCR valve: Inspect this valve carefully to detect any signs of wear or damage that could lead to leakage.
  • Choke manifold valves: Verify the condition of each valve on the choke manifold. This will maintain proper control over the fluid flow.
  • Casing valve: Assess the casing valve for any abnormalities or malfunctions. They could compromise its sealing capability.

To test the integrity of BOP valves, perform a series of actions: open and close each valve, followed by a quarterback turn. This method helps reveal any issues that might arise during operation. It allows for timely maintenance and prevention of potential hazards.

3) Installation

When inspecting your BOP, start by verifying its correct installation atop the oil well. But don’t just focus on the BOP alone. You’ll need to examine every valve, cable, and additional component to confirm they’re securely installed and in their designated positions.

Even the slightest installation oversight could lead to significant issues down the line. Take the time to ensure every part is snugly in place for optimal safety and functionality.

4) Hoses & Cables

In addition to valves, gauges, and installation, it’s crucial to inspect hoses and cables for signs of leakage or loose fittings. These thorough checks maintain the integrity of your equipment and minimize the risk of malfunctions. Here’s a breakdown of what to focus on:

  • Check the connections for accumulator air and electric systems to ensure they’re secure.
  • Inspect the panic line and flair stack for any potential issues or irregularities.
  • Examine the flex hose kill line and its safety cable for proper installation.
  • Verify the connection from the HCR valve to the choke manifold. Don’t overlook its accompanying safety cable.
  • Lastly, inspect all hydraulic hoses to ensure good condition and proper connection.

Prioritizing Safety with Your Blowout Preventers

If you haven’t conducted your inspection checklist for blowout preventers lately, now’s the perfect time to catch up! In the oil and gas industry, regular inspections and preventive maintenance are essential to ensure machinery operates safely and efficiently. Grab your checklist, go over every aspect of your oilfield, and promptly address any issues that arise.
